It’s social commentary that will touch on a little bit of THIS–(social) media, social justice, education, literature/lit. criticism–and a little bit of THAT: politics, sports, black popular culture, black masculinity, religion, technology, the everyday matters that matter to me, you, us/we…
“New Notes from a Native Son” comes to you from a “native son” of many “yards”–Golden Grove and Anna Regina, Guyana, Brownsville, BedStuy, Crown Heights, Flatbush, Annecy, Virginia, Andover, Bronxville, Mt. Vernon, Medford, Nashville (yeah I know)–who is now entering the academy at a predominantly white liberal arts institution, but maintains a strong commitment to urban education and mentorship through working with a predominantly black and latino (minority) urban high school, Boys & Girls High School.
“New Notes” comes from the me who is poet, freelance writer, teacher, son, grandson, husband, uncle, brother, friend, a fun-loving and skeptical black man in the age of change…
It’s from the me that loves Breadrins Baldwin, Wright, Hurston, Hughes, Phyllis Wheatley, Rodney, Nanny of the Maroons, C.L.R. James, El Hajj Malik Shabazz, everyday folks, homeboys, and homegirls with hand grenades: Sonya Sanchez, Alice Walker, Estelle, Lauryn Hill, Paulianda, Miss Lou, Ninny, my momma, my students…
